  Dr. Aprille Ericsson\, NASA Aerospace Engineer\, Technologist\, Project\,

 y Hall.</p>\n<p>Aerospace engineer Aprille Ericsson&rsquo\;s career is dis
 tinguished by &ldquo\;firsts.&rdquo\; She considers her most prestigious t
 he honor of being the first person of color to receive The Washington Awar
 d from the Western Society of Engineers. Raised in the projects of Bedford
 -Stuyvesant\, she is the first African-American female to receive a Ph.D. 
 in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University and the first African-Ame
 rican female to receive a Ph.D. in Engineering at the NASA Goddard Space F
 light Center\, where she currently serves as New Business lead for the Ins
 trument Systems and Technology Division.</p>\n<p>During her 25+ year tenur
 e with NASA\, Dr. Ericsson has worked as Aerospace Engineer\, Technologist
 \, Project and Program Manager and Executive. She has taught at Howard Uni
 versity\, the University of Maryland\, and Bowie State University. Dr. Eri
 csson has been named one of the top 50 minority women working in science a
 nd engineering fields by the National Technical Association\, and she was 
 ranked 8 of 20 on the 2016 list of the Most Powerful Women Engineers by <e
 m>Business Insider.</em></p>\n<p>As an attitude control systems specialist
 \, Dr. Ericsson's satellite missions have included projects X-Ray Timing E
 xplorer\, Tropical Rain Forest Measurement Mission\, and the Wilkerson Mic
 rowave Anisotropy Probe. For these projects\, she developed and used progr
 ams for dynamic modeling simulation\, which are invaluable in predetermini
 ng the dynamics and structural reactions of spacecraft. Following those as
 signments\, Dr. Ericsson was detailed to NASA HQs as a Program Executive f
 or Earth Science and a Business Executive for Space Science. She returned 
 to the Goddard Space Flight Center for a long tenure as an Instrument Proj
 ect Manager\, where she led spaceflight instrument teams and proposal deve
 lopments.</p>\n<p>Dr. Ericsson&rsquo\;s work as an aerospace engineer has 
 presented many opportunities to fulfill her dream of advancing space fligh
 t. She speaks to young people across the country &ndash\; especially minor
 ities and women &ndash\; to encourage them to follow in her footsteps.</p>
