 K HISTORY MONTH.&nbsp\;</strong></p>\n<p>Professor Christopher Schmidt wil
 l discuss his book\, "The Sit-Ins\, Protest and Legal Change in the Civil 
 Rights Era"\, which tells the story of the 1960 student lunch counter prot
 ests and the national debate they sparked over the meaning of the constitu
 tional right of all Americans to equal protection of the law. He will desc
 ribe how\,&nbsp\;on February 1\, 1960\,&nbsp\;four Black college students&
 nbsp\;in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, decided to engage in a sit-in prote
 st&nbsp\;at a Woolworth's\, and how this courageous act sparked a protest 
 movement against racial discrimination in public accommodations that swept
  across the South. He will situate this iconic moment of the civil rights 
 movement into the continuing history of struggles for equal access to publ
 ic accommodations.</p>\n<p>Presenter: Christopher W. Schmidt is a Professo
 r and Co-Director of the Institute on the Supreme Court of the United Stat
 es at Chicago-Kent College of Law. He is also a Research Professor at the 
 American Bar Foundation and the Editor of "Law &amp\; Social Inquiry".<br 
 />Professor Schmidt teaches and writes primarily in the areas of constitut
 ional law and legal history. He received his Ph.D. in American Studies fro
 m Harvard and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.&nbsp\;He has written two b
 ooks: "The Sit-Ins: Protest and Legal Change in the Civil Rights Era" (Uni
 versity of Chicago Press\, 2018)\; and "Civil Rights in America: A History
 " (Cambridge University Press\, 2021). He is currently writing a history o
 f the U.S. Supreme Court and its relationship with the American people ove
