Budding percussionists of all ages (3-93) will learn how to make and play simple percussion instruments from wood an d items found around the home. At the beginning of the workshop\, Duane an d Maureen will show some percussion instruments that they have built (rain sticks\, cajons\, kalimbas\, guiros\, thunder drums\, and dozens more)\, and they will explain their building techniques. Everyone is welcomed to t ry out the instruments. \;Following that\, Duane and Maureen will hel p class participants make simple instruments using everyday objects. The w orkshop will end with a brief concert performed by all the budding percuss ionists!
\nMaterials: Duane and Maureen will provide materials for m aking simple percussion instruments&mdash\;e.g.\, blocks of hardwood and s mall\, hard plastic bottles. If participants can bring some small\, hard p lastic bottles with lids (e.g.\, \; vitamin containers)\, that would b e helpful (but not required).
\nMaureen Roen directs the Creative Se rvices team in ASU&rsquo\;s College of Integrative Sciences and Arts. She plays percussion with the Chandler Symphony Orchestra\, Ahwatukee Foothill s Concert Band\, Women&rsquo\;s Orchestra of Arizona\, and the Hot Beignet s traditional jazz band.
\nDuane Roen is a retired professor of Engl ish at ASU. When he is not writing and teaching writing\, he enjoys buildi ng things&mdash\;including percussion instruments made from wood and other materials.
