\nThe term &ldquo\;zi nes&rdquo\; (/ziin/ ZEENS\; short for magazine or fanzine) was borne out o f fervent sci-fi fandoms in the early 1950s\, extended through to the punk music scenes of the 1970s\, the riot grrrl movement of the 1990s and beyo nd. An open-ended self-publishing format\, zines often transcend designate d boundaries and reach into classrooms as educational tools\, archivists&r squo\; maps documenting local histories and shifting geographies\, even as an experimental form of art therapy. As a vehicle for creative expression \, anyone with a pen\, paper\, and scissor can create their own zine to sh are with their friends and communities\, making them one of the most democ ratic forms of literature.

\nAbout the Artis t:
\nJose Luis Garcia received his BFA in Visual Art from N ew World School of the Arts/University of Florida and his MFA in Studio Ar t from Florida International University. He has exhibited artwork locally in institutions and venues such as the Patricia and Philip Frost Art Museu m\, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens\, Coral Gables Museum\, Bakehouse Art Compl ex\, and Laundromat Art Space. Garcia has taught various educational resid encies as a Teaching Artist with Arts for Learning Miami\, led workshops w ith Miami-Dade Public Libraries' The Vasari Project\, and is a Professor o f Art &\; Photography at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus\, New World School of the Arts\, and Broward College North Campus.

\nAbout the Vasari Project:
\nThe Vasari Project is a library collection dedicated to documenting\, collecting\, and prese rving Miami-Dade County's art history from 1945 to the present. It is a li ving archive that grows through contributions from artists\, art professio nals\, exhibition spaces\, galleries\, institutions\, and private \;do nors.
\nThe Vasari Project is a resource for ongoing research\, scho larship\, publications\, artists' projects\, exhibitions\, and events. The archive collects documentation rather than original works of art composed primarily of printed matter: correspondence\, press clippings\, photograp hs\, posters\, books\, exhibition catalogs\, artists' files\, oral histori es\, and other ephemeral \;materials.
\nThe Vasari Project holds a zine collection that now includes a circulating collection located with in the YA section at the Main Library.

\nAbo ut the Division of Special Collections &\; Archives \;
\nMiami-Dade Public Library System&rsquo\;s Division of Special Collect ions &\; Archives is located at the Main Library and holds rare and irr eplaceable historical materials for the benefit of the public and scholarl y community. They oversee the Helen Muir Florida Collection\, 16mm Film Co llection\, Cuban Collection of Rare Books &\; Ephemera\, Genealogy Coll ection\, Vasari Project archive\, and Rare &\; Antiquarian books from a s early as the 17th \;century. The Division aims to provide the public with the contents of these collections at their request\, which include b ooks\, original manuscripts\, over 18\,000 photographs\, prints\, artifact s\, audiovisual resources\, and electronic media.
