  a 1951 film directed by Brian Desmond Hurst.</p>\n<p>"This film\, and Ala
 stair Sim's performance as Scrooge in particular\, so perfectly captures D
 ickens's novella that all other versions feel redundant.<br />Dickens anti
 hero is definitive\, a cynical brute who nonetheless seems to be hiding ti
 ny glimmers of kindness behind those huge\, sad and soulful eyes.<br />Las

 ark Holding\, a film studies professor.</p>\n<p>The screenings include a c
 omprehensive handout\, brief intro to the film\, and end with a group disc
 ussion. Popcorn and cold drinks served. This is similar to a book club and
  a great group of people. Mark is very open to input on the films to scree

 \n<p>For Mark\, films create community and foster empathy.</p>\n<p>Growing
  up in the UK\, Mark&rsquo\;s frequent visits to &lsquo\;the pictures&rsqu
 o\; provided him with\, among many other wonders\, his first window into t
 he New World and all things American. It was the beginning of a love affai
 r. When he moved to New Hampshire in the early 80s\, Mark began a lifelong
  career teaching English and Film Studies at three New Hampshire public hi
 gh schools and at St. Paul&rsquo\;s Advanced Studies Program. Exploring an
 d studying films with his students\, Mark discovered film&rsquo\;s power a
 s a cross-generational connection. When he retired\, he collaborated with 
 Carol Nelson at the Peterborough Community Theatre to host a popular weekl
 y Film Club\, where movie fans and film buffs shared their thoughts in pos
 t-viewing large-group discussions. He currently teaches an Introduction to
  Film Studies course at Keene State College&rsquo\;s CALL continuing ed. p
 rogram. All these teaching/moderating experiences have confirmed Mark&rsqu
 o\;s belief that discussion is the single most helpful way to a greater un
 derstanding\, appreciation\, and enjoyment of film.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\nh
