  as Mary Carson Breckinridge and Mary Settles</p>\n<p>Mary Carson Breckinr
 idge&rsquo\;s journey through personal tragedy paired with the desire to s
 erve those whose needs were greater than her own led her to establish the 
 Frontier Nursing Service in 1925.&nbsp\;The first American trained nurse m
 idwife\, Mary recognized the deficient healthcare in the region and sought
  to provide infant and maternal care to the citizens of eastern Kentucky.&
 nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Mary Settles survived abandonment by her husband\, war on t
 he doorstep of her home at Pleasant Hill\, religious persecution\, and eco
 nomic decline. As a public school teacher and religious educator for twent
 y-seven years\, Mary shared her vision of racial equality\, women's rights
 \, respect for the earth\, and enduring hope for peace with more than thre
 e generations of Kentuckians.</p>\n<p>Janet Scott portrays Mary Carson Bre
 ckinridge and Mary Settles. Ms. Scott grew up in Shaker Heights\, Ohio\, a
 nd graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College. She enjoyed a 30-year c
 areer as a working actress\, playwright\, and teacher in New York City. In
  addition to her&nbsp\; Chautauqua performances\, Ms. Scott is a guest art
 ist with the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre.</p>\n<p>Kentucky Chauta
